Quantum Physics and NLP
By Kenneth L. Pierce

Logically, we know that in some way we are a part of the known universe. We know that the Laws of Quantum Mechanics, Particle Physics and Cosmology apply to everything in the known universe, including us. We know we have a heart to pump our blood down, up and sideways inside our body, because otherwise Nature’s Law of Gravity would force it all to our feet. We know that if we lean to far over, we will fall on our “keister” because without balance gravity takes over here also. But how do these fundamental Laws of Nature apply to us personally, emotionally and intellectually. Well, what if they applied in ways that are really quite obvious but which we often fail to notice.

For example, the world has been watching with morbid interest the “War on Terrorism” which mostly involves a daily listing of the negative impact of the events of September 11th on individuals and groups throughout the world. Yet few people seem to be noticing the beneficial impact from the same events. For example, many people have lost family members and others have learned to be afraid. Yet many other people have been drawn together into tighter more supportive families, groups, organizations, communities and countries. What if this paradoxical phenomenon is an application of one of the Laws of Nature? And what if when we are aware of it, this changes how we perceive events in the world or even in our life? And what if in changing our perceptions, we also change our feelings about the event and ourselves permanently?

We are often not aware of how the Laws of Nature apply to the human condition. Those who study the groundbreaking work of Dr. William Glasser’s “Choice Theory” and NLP have a keen awareness of our biology and our ability to redesign how we think and act. For example, Glasser’s Choice Theory holds that ever behavior is what he terms a “total behavior” of four parts. There is an acting component and a thinking component, which control feeling and physiological components. He uses the metaphor of a front wheel drive car to explain how the two front wheels of every behavior, the acting and thinking, determine where the back wheels go, what feeling and physiology is generated. He argues that we only have direct control over the acting and thinking parts of our behavior. But at the same time by steering our car, through actions and thoughts, we can determine how we will feel and how our body will respond.

You could say perhaps that using Glasser’s fundamental premise of “total behavior”, we, in the field of NLP, offer people new ways of acting and thinking that enable them to empower themselves both emotionally and physically, toward their future. And after our interventions these people often experience a state of emotional, intellectual and physical balance or homeostasis.

This can leave one wondering if what is happening when we do interventions is actually an application of these Laws of Nature. If so, how can we identify and evolve them more efficiently? If we can use the Laws of Nature to travel to the moon, how can we use these same laws to transcend other barriers in our lives? Someone once said, if you can conceive it you can do it. If that is the case how do we need to think about the Laws of Nature to help us evolve our own selves and our own relationships?

As you well know, the more time you spend exploring NLP, the more you tend to work your way up the logical levels of learning to the top – to the spiritual level - to our connection to the universe. Not surprisingly, it is at this logical level where it clearest how we are so connected and controlled by these universal Laws of Nature.

The work of Dr. John F. Demartini has been focused on this very challenge for a number of years. In his latest book entitled “The Breakthrough Experience - A Revolutionary New Approach to Personal Transformation”, he described in detail his journey to find what he calls “the universal principles of life and health”. The result of this was an awareness that the universe is always in perfect balance and operating under very specific laws to ensure the maintenance of this balance. And also, that human also follow these same laws, often without their awareness. He notes that all organized belief systems are attempts by the people of that period to explain their understanding of these laws. He argues, rather convincingly, that since physicists tell us quite emphatically that the entire known universe is in a perfect balance within itself, it can only be our perceptions that are off balance. While this observation is not new, what Demartini does is offer something more.

Dr. Demartini, incorporating a process found in the world of physics called “collapsing wave functions”, developed what we in the NLP field might call a technique, protocol or tool which enables anyone who chooses to develop an awareness and appreciation for anything which in the past they have had a strong emotional attachment to, be it negative or positive. Demartini calls it “The Quantum Collapse Process™”.

Imagine, if you will, a person being able to learn to not just develop a balanced emotional state around some tragic event in their past [which is not uncommon using some current NLP protocols] but also to learn to feel unconditional love for the event, the perpetuator and for its impact on them. After completing ““The Quantum Collapse Process™”, I listened to a woman who had lost a breast through cancer say to me congruently that she did not need her breast back since she had gained just as much by losing it, if not more. I witnessed a parent whose son had suicided a fortnight earlier say, after completing Demartini’s tool, that she learned to appreciate both her son’s life and his death and that she was ready to move on.

A similar awareness occurred in a “heart disease recovery support group”, with whom I worked, who were asked to name one disadvantage of heart disease. The list included: pain, fear, medications, missing work, boredom, rabbit food and loneliness. Then I asked them to name one advantage. At first there was confusion but then each of them became aware of the benefits that were also present that they hadn’t noticed. These included: time off work to relax, time to read, loving family attention, unlimited backrubs, feelings of being valued, a renewed appreciation for life and a new ability to set priorities easily.
As they noted a consistent advantage for each disadvantage, they also noticed that their level of emotion about their experience came to a point of what they called “OKness”, “balance” and “peacefulness”. One gentleman said something to the effect that, “My heart attack happened and now I just need to put it behind me and move on with the rest of my life.” The intense emotional states of fear, anger and resentment disappeared immediately.

These experiences or learnings suggest that Demartini’s application of the Laws of Nature to the human condition could provide a fruitful perspective for future explorations. Maybe, we could all dig out our old high school physics text and review how the Laws of Thermodynamics can be applied to our own work and our own evolution.
